Preliminary Exercise 3: Introduction to Mise en scene Organizer

Introduction to the Elements of Mise en scene for the film Elemental(2023)

The objective of this preliminary exercise is to be able to analyze film with mise sen scene. Mise sen scene is everything you see, including the setting, acting, lighting, costumes, and the way everything is arranged. It helps set the mood for the story. Three reasons mise en scene is important are first it helps set the mood and atmosphere, second it tells a story without words, and third it enables you to find more meanings in a scene. In film, a genre is a collection of movies defined by a common theme and style. Mise en scene supports genre in film because it is everything you see in a scene and it puts certain things and arranges them for a specific genre. Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and how they create meaning. In a film, mise en scène elements like lighting, costumes, or props act as visual signs that convey deeper messages. For example, in a horror movie like in the movie scream VI, a flickering light might symbolize danger or fear, helping the audience understand the mood without words.
