Pre-production: Save the Cat Beat Sheet

 


The save the car beach structure is a popular structure method that breaks the narratives into 15 plot points know as beats. Blake Snyder is the developer of this structure, it was developed because it is to help writers understand the common narrative pattern. using the first 5 beats as a template for the opening.

Define continuity: the idea that a sequence of shots should feel like a single shot, with a smooth flow and consistent details

Description or Synapsis of Film

 

A group of  3 misfits getting bullied by 4 people and after a while they are tired of the bullying they want revenge and they plan and go after the bullies to kill them

 

 

Conventions of a Film Opening and Narrative Structure

Film Opening Conventions: Document the conventions of a film opening. E.g., Production company, titles, etc.

Fright entertainment, revenge of the unseen

What is Exposition and list techniques used to establish the world of a film?

Exposition is a comprehensive description or explanation to get across an idea, techqniuqes are the camera movements, and mis en scene elements

List examples of Exposition in the Film Opening

The main character narration about all the misfits while going to the other misfits and it’s the main character talking about there status and backstory

Beat I: The Opening Image

A visual image that represents the central struggle & tone of the story.

·         A snapshot of the main character's problem before the adventure begins.

·         It sets the tone, mood, genre, and setting of the movie.

 

Document the setting, location (inside-outside), genre, theme, tone, the mood of the film. It includes narrative devices such as text, voice-over, etc.

List 3 adjectives to describe the setting of the film.

Dark, rigourus

List 2 feelings that you would want your audience to film.

Introducing the main characters, there social status and whats happening to them

 

( Note: you can add the setup into the opening image also. For example, introduce the main character immediately in the film.)

Beat II: Theme Stated

It is the central theme or premise of the film. The message, the truth you want to reveal by the end of your screenplay.

·         A secondary character poses a question or statement to the main character to reveal the theme.

The 2nd misfit asking if they should kill their bullies and they start planning

·         What is your story about in a larger sense or the big picture?

The consequences of bulliyng people and what it can lead to

·         What is the purpose or reason for the movie?

To show what happens when people get pushed to there limits

·         What is the problem the main character is faced with?

The way they are going to kill the bullies

·         What does the main character have to accomplish?

The killing of all the bullies

 

Describe Beat II

(Long answer) the central theme or premise of the film. The message, the truth you want to reveal by the end of the screenplay

Beat III: The Set-Up

Introduction of the main characters in the film and an expansion of the opening image.

·         Present the main character's world as it is, and what is missing in their life revealed.

It is in the earth in the 21st century.

What is the name of your main character?

Blare, hazel and jermy(germ)

List 3 adjectives to describe  who they are.4

Short, weird, not social

Who do they represent? Race, gender, sexuality, social group, social class, etc.

1 white, 1 black, and 1 mixed/ all nerd/ and all straight

List two moral viewpoints they believe in. E.g., Family, Friendship, It okay to lie, cheat and steal, get good grades or go home, and do whatever it takes.

Its okay to kill for revenge, and do what ever it takes

List two interests of your main character and list 2 ways you will illustrate them.

Anime, pokemon

Eg sports, academics, music, art, reading, spending time with friends, bullying, money, fun, etc.

 

 

Beat IV: Catalyst/ Hook

A life-changing event that causes a significant change in the main character's life.

Them killing the first and start a domino effect of them planning and killing the rest of the bullies

• A moment where the opportunity to go on a journey is presented to the main character.

• Life as it is, is changing.

The reason you watch the rest of the movie is the sound, characters' actions, eye-catching props, and mise en scene, which symbolize meaning and support the genre.

What is the purpose of sound in the film?

 

The Components of Sound

Define Dialogue

conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or movie.

Define Sound Effects

a sound other than speech or music made artificially for use in a play, movie, or other broadcast production

Define Music

vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion

Define diegetic sounds

any sound that originates from the world of a film or video, and occurs at the same time as an action

List the diegetic sounds in the movie and give two or more examples.

Sound that is added to a film in post-production and is not heard by the characters in the film

The beat when there beating the bully, the chatting in the backround, and screaming

A sound that does not match the visual

How does sound establish the opening image, the theme stated, set-up, and the catalyst?

Ask questions such as: Is the sound melodic, discordant, or crescendo? How is the rhythm illustrating the pace of the film? (fast, slow, irregular)

 

It sets the mood of the beats and give a clear visual of the movie
